How many pages is sophie and carter
There were just too many things that were almost laughably impossible for this to be a believable story for me, so it definitely took away from the sweet romance factor.
If more detail had been put into the story and their living situations had been more plausible, this could have been a really great story. And that ending Jul 21, Debbie rated it it was amazing Shelves: review-book , romance , contemporary-romance , favorite , on-my-kindle , mature-upper-young-adult , sociology-abuse , friends-to-lovers.
I'm still crying as I write this review. Chelsea Fine has written a beautiful, heart-melting story. Sophie's porch swing has become their meeting place at the end of day. Their sanctuary, and a place where they draw strength from one another.
And where they are able to then leave, whole, to be able to face another day. This is one book you don't want to miss out on! Nov 17, Eunice rated it really liked it Shelves: multiple-pov , realistic-fiction , ya-romance , contemporary , young-adult.
It's sweet, heartwarming and touching. I love every part of it. Its an easy and quick read though I wouldn't really mind if the story is longer. I would love to see more of Sophie and Carter. I admire their friendship, their relationship and their devotion to each other.
They understand each other even without speaking, they know each others hurts and struggles and they know that they could trust and depend on each other. It was great and really heartwarmi 4. It was great and really heartwarming. You would understand the need of both the characters and its just really touching to know that the care and love they showed to each other are true and genuine. It would just make you smile and make your heart really warm.
Okay, I've been saying the same things over and over again just in different structure. But really, this is just really a wonderful read. Read this! Jul 26, Raine Thomas rated it it was amazing. I loved this book's guts! It follows year-old Sophie Hartman and her same-aged next-door neighbor Carter Jax through their last weeks of high school.
The reader learns early on that their lives are anything but typical. But they're very good at pretending otherwise. Fine does an amazing job of making the two main characters, whose circumstances are quite heartbreaking, anything but pitiable.
They I loved this book's guts! They're strong, smart and resilient, and what makes their situations easier for the reader to bear is the fact that they have each other, and that somehow makes everything okay. I hope I get to see more of them Jan 06, Misty Baker rated it it was amazing. My mother-in-law is a reader. A causal one, of course, because she unlike myself has a life, but the fact remains that she is…indeed…a participant in that nightly brain-numbing ritual so many of us hold so dear.
She is sweet, well meaning, and always on the go, all qualities I My mother-in-law is a reader. She is sweet, well meaning, and always on the go, all qualities I admire, but lack in my own character make-up. I am that random emo girl you see in Target who always looks lost and a little uncomfortable. She has Bunko groups and spa days. I hide in corners chicken-scratching crossword puzzles, and get my toes done once every 4 months when my heels start to resemble the Grand Canyon.
I like SAD ones. It is by now no great mystery that I prefer devastating literature over the bouncy-blonde-my-stupidity-will-make-you-giggle variety. It is in my nature, I guess you could say, solidified by my writing style and choice of music.
I want for nothing. I do not struggle for my independence or spend my evenings curled up in a corner in fear. I have beautiful children, which I easily feed and clothe. I have a husband who does not beat me. I am blessed. My choices in literature offer balance. A counter weight if you will to help keep my eyes open. In short…they act as my conscience. No arguments. Tears be damned. We are not living this book through the chopped and sometimes meaningless outward conversation of teenagers.
A connection between two people, who know intimate details about the other, and struggle to maintain a balance between love and duty. Now, I know I have put mounds of stress on the word devastating, and I assure you…this is a very sad book filled with very sad situations, but at the same time it is uplifting, sweet and offers a lesson that each of us would be wise to learn. Well worth the money and the few hours it will take you to gobble it up. Mar 06, Tara rated it really liked it. Ok, so normally I read more "happy-go-lucky," romantic tension-filled, light, fun reads.
This was not that kind of book. But not in a bad way. It was heartbreakingly beautiful and sweet. There was more to this novella than some full-length novels. Not all teenagers' lives are cotton candy-filled existences, where the biggest problem is deciding what to wear to school. Sometimes their lives suck and they are forced to be adults long before their time. Such is the case with Sophie and Carter. They Ok, so normally I read more "happy-go-lucky," romantic tension-filled, light, fun reads.
They are seniors in high school and next door neighbors. They don't talk at school or at least rarely , and no one knows they even know each other, other than being neighbors. But every night, after everyone is in bed, they meet on Sophie's front porch swing, and just sit. And this has been the brightest part of their day for as long as they've done it. See, ever since Carter was a little boy, his father physically abused him and his mom. Until one day not long before the present time , he finally was big enough and old enough to fight back.
The parts of the book that were hard to read were when Carter or Sophie would briefly remember an incident with his dad. The fact that a parent could ever harm their child is despicable and beyond my comprehension. But it happens all the time. Due to the abuse, his mom was left mentally insane, constantly see things that weren't there and would think they were after her, causing her to be a danger to herself But despite anything that ever happened, Sophie was always there for Carter, silently loving him, being his rock, giving him something constant to look forward to every day.
Sophie's mom was a prostitute and would be gone for months at a time, leaving Sophie in charge of her three younger siblings. They would last as long as they could until they were bone-dry money and food-wise, then she would track her mom down and get enough money to get by. And Carter was her rock. He would give them food, fix things, help with the Littles her siblings Deep down, they know they love each other, but eventually finally come to realize it and voice it.
The story ends "happily," and you're left hoping for a fresh start for all of them Content: clean; some violence when thinking back on Carter's father's abuse. Oct 17, heather - NightlyReading rated it it was amazing. I loved the synopsis for this book and it kind of reminded me of Forbidden by Tabitha Suzema, just without the incest part. The two main characters have big shoes to fill being the head of their households and somehow find solace in each other.
No one else knows what their home life is like and they like it that way. They only can rely on each other. I enjoyed reading about their blossoming relationship. It was beautiful to see when they realized how they really felt about each other. They were trying to be so strong for each other and truly had a real love. Even if it took them many years to realize it. The stories that each of these characters went through was excruciatingly damaging, but Ms.
Fine wrote their stories with elegance and was able to tell their tale with grace. The book was a short read and I would definitely recommend it. Where we bleed and break. Where we give up. Where we sigh. Where we barely survive.
Nov 03, BookHookup rated it really liked it. Sometimes life deals you more then you ever thought you could possibly handle. And, sometimes we are blessed with that one person that is always there for us, picks us up from our impossible lives and urges us forward regardless of the situation or circumstance and this story tells the tale of just that… Best friends and next door neighbors, Sophie and Carter are forced to take on unimaginable responsibilities and grow up entirely too fast because of their difficult and dysfunctional lives.
As th Sometimes life deals you more then you ever thought you could possibly handle. As the two struggle to keep their families intact, the bond they share grows stronger, blossoming into something even deeper than friendship. When I received this book, I was a bit surprised at how small it was.
I mean, how can you possibly tell such a complicated story such as this in only pages? Well, Chelsea pulled it off and created a heartbreaking, complex tale involving dimensional, relateable characters that you will instantly fall in love with.
I loved the alternating point of views between Sophie and Carter. There were a few phrases that were a bit overused in my opinion, but other than that the dialogue was fitting and purposeful; allowing us a clear, understandable view into the thoughts and lives these two wonderful characters.
The only reason I gave this book four hotties instead of five, is simply because I wanted it to be longer. Oct 20, PopcornReads - MkNoah rated it it was amazing Shelves: fiction , romance , giveaway , young-adult , ya , chelsea-fine.
I do know that I contacted the publisher and asked to review it, and with fingers crossed asked if they would sponsor a book giveaway. Yep, I cried — so there. Sophie and Carter, the two main characters and narratives, had been through hell of a l "Our moment is over so I slowly release her.
Sophie and Carter, the two main characters and narratives, had been through hell of a life, dealing with family problems. They live next door, and they know each others' troubles more than their own. And that's what keeps them inseparable.
Still, I savoured it quickly and I'm very glad I requested this novel, because it made me in love with love. Oct 04, Tamara Rose Blodgett rated it it was amazing Shelves: ya , romance , contemporary , ya-crossover , dysfunction. This is a very different narrative twist and I loved the way the author shifted back and forth between the two perspectives of the dual-MC's. It was truly riveting to see, fish-bowl style, their dysfunctional and tragic lives up close.
What was really interesting is how much alike they were on the inside, regardless of gender. Two kids that live next door to each other witness the systematic abuse of the other over their mutual childhood and find solace in each other When graduation This is a very different narrative twist and I loved the way the author shifted back and forth between the two perspectives of the dual-MC's.
When graduations looms they ask themselves both without the other knowing , if they can bridge the gap to romance. Sophie and Carter are terrified to trust I loved this books guts! Feb 19, Laurence R. Hum, kind of just average for me. A beautiful book about the real, solid kind of love, Chelsea Fine has written a simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming story about the perseverance of the human heart, second chances and the people who get us through.
For all intents and purposes, Sophie and h 4. Selfless and loving, Sophie is an amazing character. Never once did she bitterly resent the fact that this was her lot in life — that she had lost her childhood to become essentially mother and caregiver to her brothers and sister.
Growing up under the heavy fist of an abusive father, Carter bears scars both inwardly and outwardly. His daily struggle balancing the memory of who his mother used to be and who she has become is an intensely painful one, but he like Sophie, endeavors to keep what is left of his family together.
Carter is sweet, generous, unselfish and fiercely protective of both his mother and of Sophie and the Littles. Their love for each other is pure and selfless.
But will they realize how deep their love for each other is? Is a happily-ever-after even possible for them? The length of this story was perfect and the plot very well-paced.
The book is always moving forward, each alternating narrative usually picking up the story right where the other left off. I discovered Chelsea Fine when I read Anew and absolutely loved it one of my all time favorites so I immediately looked up what else she has.
Since she's a pretty new author, she doesn't have much YET she's got a lot of ideas I've heard. Because Anew was a paranormal type book, I had no idea what to expect when reading a contemporary by the same author.
But I didn't lose anything I loved about Ms. Fine's writing. Sophie and Carter are neighbors and best friends. They've supported each other f I discovered Chelsea Fine when I read Anew and absolutely loved it one of my all time favorites so I immediately looked up what else she has.
They've supported each other for years as well as the others' family. Even though they don't interact that much at school, they're very close when the get home. Every night they sit on Sophie's front porch swing and visit too cute! Carter comes from an abusive father and a mother who, from the abuse, has lost her mind. Sophie doesn't know who her father is and her mother is in and out of the house because of drugs and the work she's in not good to say the least. Sophie is basically the mother of the Littles as she lovingly calls her three younger siblings.
She feeds them, makes them go to bed on time and do their homework. She worries about the bills to be paid and when she'll see their mother again. The hardships are what brought Sophie and Carter together, though, and they've stuck together. Carter was abused as a little boy by his father. When his father left, he left Carter to take care of his mother who has lost her mind.
The love and patience he shows his mother is beautiful. It's one thing to see a boy take care of a beautiful girl he's in love with, but completely touching to see him take care of a mother who thinks bugs are crawling over her skin or aliens are taking the dishes and nonsense like that. Even though Sophie and Carter is a novella an extremely short book , I feel like I know them really well.
It's amazing how attached I became to them even though it hardly took any time at all to read it. I literally cried So, if you're worried about it being too shallow because it's short My favorite scene was probably when Carter came to Sophie's house to help get the kids ready for school.
She made him coffee and he kissed Sophie's youngest sister,, calling her sunshine. He roughed around with the boys and fixed the wiggling table. There really wasn't anything I didn't like about the book or could complain about except how short it was and in all honesty, sometimes it's just nice to have a short read that touches you.
As for content, I can't say it was completely clean, but not for the usual reasons. There was no language. However, the abuse Carter suffers by his father is described in detail. Also, Sophie's mother is a prostitute and on drugs. Quite a bit happens there and some crude language by the man who runs the dancing club. Just some minor kissing. Jul 21, Katelyn Tales of Books and Bands rated it it was amazing Shelves: read-in , own , 5-stars , young-adult , own-hardcopy.
This is the best little surprise I could have ever hoped for. When I read the summary for this book I thought it sounded like the most wonderful contemporary fiction story ever. It sounds like just the type of thing that I would love. However, when the book showed up and I noticed how small it was, I began to get a bit worried.
How could a book that is only pages be any good? I felt their pain, and I so desperately wanted a better life for the both of them. Sophie and Carter are two teenagers dealing with a whole lot of crap. Carter on the other hand has only one person to take care of and that is his mom. My heart broke for both characters. Their lives are so difficult, complicated, and so devastating. Instead of their crap-tastic lives bringing their personalities down though, these two stay strong by bonding together.
