Mar 23, Jobetta rated it did not like it. Sounded interesting, as I love Jack the Ripper, but Graysmith's theory is very weak and while the stories of the murders in question should have been interesting, he took so long to get to the point that they were an afterthought.

As a journalist, I also thought I would enjoy the part of the book about the newspaper wars in San Francisco at the turn of the century, but that wound up just being cumbersome. Both my boyfriend, also a journalist, and I read the book and although we are both fast rea Sounded interesting, as I love Jack the Ripper, but Graysmith's theory is very weak and while the stories of the murders in question should have been interesting, he took so long to get to the point that they were an afterthought.

Both my boyfriend, also a journalist, and I read the book and although we are both fast readers, neither of us could get through this easily.

By the end, we were cursing the book and our stubborn refusal to read to the very end. Mar 24, Terri rated it did not like it Shelves: true-crime. As true crime goes, I had high hopes. After all, Graysmith's Zodiac books were good. Plus I am fascinated by Ripperology. But as it, the crimes had no similarity to those of the Ripper, so the book was flawed right away. Killers just don't change their MO that much. So I could not accept any of this as anything but sensationalism.

Jan 17, Fishface rated it liked it. This was a good read -- a thoroughly novelistic treatment of both Theo Durrant and Jack the Ripper. The author does a good job of raising questions about Theo's case and how it was handled. The glimpse into turn-of-the-century San Francisco was very entertaining. Well worth a read. Aug 10, Paul Ferguson rated it did not like it. One of the worst pieces of historical analysis I've ever read.

Seriously terrible book. Jun 10, Katherine Addison rated it it was ok Shelves: that-great-cesspool , true-crime , historiography , 19th-century , whitechapel-london-uk , serial-murder , jack-the-ripper , san-francisco-ca-usa So on those counts, this was a pretty good book--although I deplore his decision to write from the PoVs of Durrant suspect , Gibson suspect , Lamont victim , Williams victim , a composite Chronicle journalist, William Randolph Hearst, M.

He says he didn't come to a realization of Jack Gibson's alter ego of Jack the Ripper until he was almost finished with the first draft of the book, and I--unworthily--wonder if his enlightenment wasn't more "this is a crazy stunt that will sell more copies," in much the vein of Hearst's approach to journalism, and less "I really believe this man was Jack the Ripper. He cherry-picks for the evidence he wants, ignores the evidence he doesn't want, and insists throughout, bizarrely, that the vague, frequently contradictory, eyewitness descriptions of a man who might or might not have been Jack the Ripper are uncannily similar to descriptions of his chosen villain, Pastor John George "Jack" Gibson, and--I can't even believe I'm typing this--that "as I compared newspaper drawings of Pastor Gibson I found in the old map drawer, I noted the similarity to an eyewitness sketch of a wanted man [i.

He's comparing drawings from life although we have no way of knowing how accurate they are with a--not very good--drawing from a description given if it was based on Lawende's description by a witness who looked at the man for less than five seconds at A. Even if you grant there's a similarity, this still isn't even isn't circumstantial evidence. This isn't even hearsay evidence. This job could've worked well in another place, however, my university was not the right choice for this company, as students did not have valued textbooks, and thus buyers made pennies, as we ended up buying out dozens of dollar books that earned us no profits.

Great Job to create income during the last days of the semester. The job was a commission based job for college students, and it was a great opportunity to use creativity and ingenuity to generate interest and sales. I would advertise that i am buying books. The company provided me with the tools i needed to buy and send the books to there location. They gave us shirt and bags to carry the books in as well. Something different I had never done before that was enjoyable.

I searched for students who desired to sell their textbooks back for some extra cash. I accommodated to the customer on when and where to meet them. I had cash on hand to give them right away for their books. Sometimes, it was difficult to find and get a hold of students. Very easy job spent on my own free time while in college. I would go to students, scan their textbooks with a phone app, and give them cash for their books.

I would then give those books to my campus representative. I made commission off the number of books I bought off of students. Claim this company page. Want to know more about working here? Pros Flexible hours. Cons Minimal buyouts. Yes There are 1 helpful reviews 1 No. Do you enjoy working at your company? Help people considering your employer make a good choice. This job was honestly more work than I had expected and was disappointed in the amount of money that I had earned.

Although, I had the opportunity to build upon my customer service and organizational skills, but the management and work experience was overall disappointing. Pros Utilizing more social media. Cons Low income. I go to a small school so the sample size to buy books was not very large.

A lot of people rent too. Elms is a small school so the sample size to buy books was not very large. There is a lot of freedom with the job and you are all on your own. The company is pretty small. The other core team members are pretty friendly and helpful, but the company is struggling to adapt to changes in the used textbook industry, which means more work for everyone without much opportunity for additional pay.

Yes There are 2 helpful reviews 2 No. Good place to start. Teaches you strong sales and lots of responsibility. Good culture, management is too hands-off though. College experience is good. I was a student when i was working for Belltower and the manager that i had was very unorganized. It seemed like nothing was planned and in order. Help us improve!

Honestly a waste of time, this job was not what I expected. It is commission based, but the compensations were extremely little.

College students did not want to sell their dollar books for 10 dollars. Pros Nothing. Cons Scam. Worked as a campus Captain and was in charge of all the finances going on and overseeing everyone that sold books under me.

Did a lot of running around to the bank and campus to get situations handled. Working at Belltower would have been fine if it paid better. You only receive 5. Even in a perfect scenario, you would be receiving a nickel for every book you buy.

Not worth the energy mainly because the only time you can work and buy back books is during finals. Pros Sounds good in theory. Cons Underpaid. Also interesting interactions with colleagues, but you get paid based on a number of books you buy, so if you do not buy any book all you time investment was a waste.

It was alright. It's a nice way to earn some money as a college student. If you have textbooks you wanna get rid of or you know other students who want to get rid of their textbooks, this company offers better prices than the bookstores. The job was a commission based job for college students, and it was a great opportunity to use creativity and ingenuity to generate interest and sales.
