Apologies if you already knew how tyre sizes work! Should have mentioned my wheels are on a toledo Thats probably where the confusion is coming from.

If they're only 6" wide it could be borderline, anything narrower which is unlikely on an S13 you wouldn't do it, but anything wider than 6" should be fine.
Soft roaders represent an excellent compromise between the needs of the hardcore 4x4 user and the convenience of a city hatchback.
Its clear to see why they have become so popular in todays society. Comment Post Cancel. Depends on the aspect ratio of the tyre aswell. I would fit s on a 6 to 7 inch rim for best fit. Yeah but the tyre will be squeezed a fair bit to get it onto a 6 inch wide rim. This will cause excessive tyre wall flex under hard cornering.
Maximum sizes, without compramiseing handleing Fitting a tyre onto a rim that is too narrow for it, actually reduces the tyres contact patch with the ground over a narrower tyre fitted to the same rim.
The"ballooning effect" that the too wide tyre sufferes from, leads to crap ponderous handleing and causes excessive tyre wall flex under cornering. It also gives you more sidewall to help protect the rims from pot holes.
The ride is a little more comfortable, but the car seems to lean more in corners due to the increased sidewall. Still grips great, though, since the tread patch is even wider. Taller sidewall, more flex, comfortable but at the price of small handling difference.. Mazda must have chosen the size for a reason? Just some thoughts. Are you saying that what Mazda put on the car can't be improved upon?
Done properly, he can go to the s and not suffer any adverse side effects. OP, You're actually adding only 4. Certainly that tire could fit on 7" or 7. This combo did that for me and I actually saved about 3. The tires are very slightly "stretched" on the 8" wheels but the rim protective tire ridge still sticks out from the wheel and the tires look pretty fat. Sidewall support seems excellent as does grip.
I'm very pleased with this setup.
